Later today I’ll be attending a community project that I signed up for to give some young year 10 students mock interviews to prepare them for their work experience placements. I love being around young people as I find it kind of brings out that side of me too but I know that it will be fun for them and enjoyable.
If you would like to get involved with projects and volunteering of this sort then a good place to start is The Youth Action Network whereby you could find a centre near you to give you guidance on what sort of volunteering activities you could participate in. Or alternatively you could contact your local council to find out what projects or organisations are in your area.
Please bear in mind though that if you wish to volunteer with young people under the age of 16 you will have to be Police checked which is a process that can take up to 10 weeks. (I speak of course about the regulations within the U.K. You will probably find out from the volunteer organisations themselves what the pre-requisites are.) Needless to say this is very important and you won’t be able to undertake activites without this.
Aside from the boring regulations bit, it’s a great opportunity for the kids to get away from school for a day, see other adults, (other than teachers) in action and gives you the opportunity to be a role model for them. I don’t feel any pressure from this, in fact, I consider it an honour if they consider me any sort of role model as I feel that I have a lot to offer them in terms of my personality, experience and nature.
Try different things out to see what you enjoy. Yes, you can do it, so why are you still sitting at your computer screen? Go!! Switch of that damn computer and just go! :p
Happy Volunteering! ![]()
