Meeting Deepak Chopra

On Monday I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing Deepak Chopra speak personally at a seminar in London.

For those who don’t know who Deepak Chopra is, he is a medical doctor by profession but over the years has fused eastern medicine with quantum physics and has developed his own philosophy on the mind-body-spirit connection. He has written over 50 books in which he very wonderfully and succinctly explains the connections in a way which even a child could understand.

His talk was lively, entertaining and very informative. He shared some very interesting facts about the make up of the human body and how within two years every atom in our body is completely replaced and so in essence; we are completely different. So what is it that retains the information that allows me to still know myself as Amit Sodha? ;-)

During the talk we had a brief 10 minute meditation in which all we did was repeat the words to ourselves in silence “I am”. So simple and yet it was so powerful. It also reminded me of a blog post in my ‘100 Days of Wisdom‘ series from day 2.

I was so engrossed in his discussion that I didn’t take many notes but he did share 15 thoughts at the end which I wanted to also share here too. I was scribbling as fast as I could and so I believe I captured all the messages correctly but if you think I missed something please do let me know.

1) There are hidden dimensions to our existence

Jesus - The Kingdom of Heaven is within you.

2) The world is in you

Jesus - Be the world and not of it.

3) There are 4 paths to unity

Jesus - For my yoke is easy and my burden is light

4) All fulfillment comes from within

Jesus - Ask and you will receive

5) Suffering is the result of not knowing the true reality

Jesus - Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us

6) Freed comes from choiceless awareness

Be still and know that I am god

7) The world is a mirror of the self

Jesus - As you sow, so shall you reap

8 ) Evil is not our enemy , evil is the personal and collective shadow

Jesus - Resist not evil

9) You live in multi dimensions

Jesus - In my fathers house there are many mansions

10) Death makes life possible

Jesus - You must be born from above

11) The universe thinks through you

Jesus - You are the light of the world

12) The only time is now

Jesus - You are the light of the world

13) You are truly free when you are not a person; we all exist in consciousness

14) Consciousness conceives, governs, constructs and becomes reality through synchronicity, self interaction and karmic connections.

Jesus - For where there are two or three gathered in my name - I will be there

15) The goal of life is unity consciousness and transcending the limitations of space, time and causality.

Jesus - What does it profit a man to gain the world and to lose his soul.

If you didn’t get to see him this time join me in setting a very powerful intention for him to return in the very near future! :-D

Enjoying the process

Now it may seem contrary to my previous article in the series from day 13 but there is also a strong reason to learn to enjoy the process. You can’t always be in this frame of mind though. It’s simply taking a few short moments to remember who you really are and what your existence is truly all about.

Having a strong focus on your desired result is awesome for long term achievement but very often what happens is people get to that point and then ask: “Is this all there is?” So what you must remember is that you won’t get satisfaction from the result. The satisfaction must come now through the process; in actual fact, the result is secondary. It’s fulfillment from the experience and the joy of doing now that will give you ultimate satisfaction. The result is the driving force to keep you going in the now. The fulfillment won’t come at the end though! That must also come now through an understanding that the process is very special time for you.

It’s a time for you to appreciate and acknowledge this wonderful gift that you have. It’s a time for you to understand that you truly have an amazing gift to be here, in the now, in this particular situation and are able to plough your energy into the things that you love doing the most. After doing this you will find that you energy levels will rise and surge. Now doubt you’ve experienced times of lethargy and low emotions? Well this is the way to increase your energy and lift your emotions. It’s a way of stilling the mind for just a few brief moments and just enough for you to feel recharged.

Special Relativity

For me, it’s not about special relativity so much as relativity which is infinitely special. It’s with the true gift of contrast and relative experience that I enjoy the greatest things that I can possibly imagine. So everyday I give extra special thanks for the special relative universe I have the great gift of being a part of.

When you climb to the top of a hill or mountain, you stand back in awe of the fabulous view. How is the view itself different from being a part of the view? You will always be a part of the landscape but just remember to climb the mountain once in a while and enjoy the stunning view!

Create some time to do the following: Sit in a relaxed place or position, this can be done anywhere. Close your eyes and I want you to quiet you mind just a little. Now I want you to listen carefully to your body. Listen to everything going on. Listen to the new cells being created replacing the old cells. Listen to your heart pump your blood around your body. Listen to your lungs expand and contract. Listen to your body absorb the water that you drink. Observe your body extracting the nutrients from your food and nourishing the body. Observe your body move your eyes. Observe your body send signals to the brain with lightening quick speed and super precise accuracy.

Without even being aware, your body does some amazing things.

Now I want you to try this. With your eyes still closed and in your relaxed state, ask your body if there is anything it needs? Stay alert for an answer. Once you have your answer, if there are any problems you have with your body, lets say, you have a bad back. Whilst in the same relaxed state I want you to converse with your body and ask those secret governing forces to heal the part that needs healing. Once you’ve made your request, I want you to say thank you 3 times.

How did this make you feel and did you notice anything unusual while doing it? :-)

Virtually anything can become a spiritual act or a meditation when you embed 3 things into your consciousness. It could be singing, dancing, rapping, climbing, golf, tennis, painting, writing, driving, playing, sex, bathing, yes, absolutely anything at all!! All you have to do is practise these 3 mantras converting them into an inner dialogue or script that gives you some fire in your belly! They are:

1) Remember that you have a wonderful gift, a body through which to experience and perform action through so that may experience emotion and action. You were given the gift of your 5 senses so that you could process, colour, contrast, smells, tastes, make tactile contact, make love or scream according to whatever emotion you choose to experience!

2) Whatever it is that you’re doing, when done in a powerful frame of mind, can enhance not only your experience, but your result too. The stronger and more focused your level of thinking will assist in giving you the greatest result. I was reminded recently of a strength test you can do whilst varying your state of mind. You will always find that you will be stronger while in a positive state than when you’re stressed or feeling low.

3) No matter the activity, think of it as “my time to grow”. It’s important to have fun but the fun expires quickly unless you’re learning and growing. So consciously tell the unconscious that through this activity you will now get better and have fun whilst learning. This act is spiritual because it is contributing to my spirit becoming immersed in the experience of now. It is in the now that truly pleasure lies.

Remember to try different things too. There is never any harm in trying something new and more than likely you going to make new friends and discover something about yourself that you never knew! ;)

I love meditating, in some ways I exploit it to my advantage because I know that it carries with it some amazing power! (I’ve made it sound evil, but truly it’s not! :P)

Here are some of the perks of meditation that I’ve found over the 15 years I’ve been a practitioner.

1) Traffic jams and queues appear to move much much quicker! - This is so true and anyone who does this will know exactly what I’m talking about! When I’ve been caught in a major traffic jam or a long queue I, more often then not, meditate! It is the perfect time, because, lets face it, what else can I do? But if I get sucked into the emotions of stress and frustration I always feel like the queue or traffic jam takes 10 times longer and I get tired, I start to yawn, I slouch in my chair, I get back ache etc! However if I take control of my state, do some relaxing meditation, I find that the queue or jam almost vanishes in no time at all!

The type of meditation doesn’t matter. I vary it according to what I feel like doing. Sometimes I just focus on my breathing make sure I’m fully oxygenating my body. Obviously though, I would not do this method if it was a hot day stuck in a traffic jam as all I would be doing is breathing in harmal toxic emissions. If that were the case I would do some commentary style self talk internally and just do some visualising or just uplifting self talk. It truly doesn’t matter what type you do, but that focus will take your mind away from the situation and hand and your perception of time will change.

I also suggest that if you’re driving that you don’t close your eyes. You can meditate just as effectively with your eyes open just as well as when your eyes are closed. In fact, open eye meditation will improve your ability to focus in the long run and will give you the power to meditate anytime, anywhere!

2) People will be much more naturally attracted to you! - Scientfic studies have shown that meditation not only has beneficial positive effects on the body but on the mind too. When I’ve had powerful meditation, or even if I’m still in a meditative state while walking or carrying on with my day to day tasks, I find that people naturally get attracted to me and want to talk to me. Not only that but I find I get twice as many smiles and people are just much more responsive and friendly! Who knows what the true reasons for this are but all I know is because people are so much more responsive to me, it allows me to then share valuable information with people, such as the work I do or even tell them about meditation. Sometimes it even just ends up being a brief encouter with us both walking away with a smile! :-D

I suggest you try this for yourself, do some meditation every morning first thing when you wake up, any type you wish; commentary, chanting, breathing, or visualising. Watch the wonderful amazing effects unfold! You will find people smiling at you and greeting you even if they don’t know you! You will find that you have more of a reason to smile and that in turn will make more people smile at you and in turn your day will go much more smoothly!

3) It takes away the awkwardness of being alone! - I personally love alone time, but I know not everyone does. Lets say you’re in a restaurant with a friend or you partner and they have to visit the bathroom or they get called away by an important phone call. Now you can choose to pass away that time feeling uncomfortable alone or you can choose to be constructive with that time to yourself. If you choose the latter and yes, you’ve guessed, I’m gonna suggest meditation! In this particular scenario, I would suggest some creative visualisation or deep breathing, however, go for chanting if you have the confidence! ;)

Just like point 1, the time will fly by much quicker but you can be proud of yourself that you’ve done something very constructive with that time!

4) You will deal with the curve balls much more efficiently! - Meditation has the added side effect of giving you much more “inner strength.” You will find that generally you will be much more well equipped to deal with the unexpected curves in the road of life. You may be dumped by your partner, you may be given the sack at work, you may be diagnosed with a terminal illness. Somehow, because you have now made meditation a part of your life, these calamities will not seem as big as they once did. You will be emotionally more stable and generally find that you feel more happy for no reason! You will look these events square in the eye and say….”thank you” because you know that these events have come to you to make you grow. You will then be in a position to help others and share the wonder of meditation with those that need it the most!

It’s not often I go over and peruse the news articles on the BBC website but I happend to go over today and found an article up regarding meditation written by my old meditation buddy Trushar Barot. We used to attend the same meditation school together some years ago and it was just by bizarre coincidence (although coincidence is just a word, we all know better than that) that I saw a link at the bottom of one of the news articles which said “ticket to nirvana” so I decided to click and found his great article. Have a read if you get the chance! :)

When you grow spiritually you automatically take those around you with you. Don’t wait for others to grow and then follow from fear of being left behind as growth will never occur. The best way to measure your growth is see how quickly you can silence yourself whilst still being aware of all that’s around you.

Spin Cycles!Every once in a while you may find yourself getting bored with the same old routine. The routine becomes so mundane that your head ends up spinning as you feel like your life is just going around in circles doing the same things over and over again! This can be particularly true if you end up doing a 9-5 everyday, 5 days a week! The only break to the cycle is the weekend and even then most of the weekend is spent worrying about the fact that Monday will come around again shortly! You spend the whole week looking forward to the weekend and then it comes and you and it becomes wasted away in a dreary cycle of trying to recouperate from the gloom of the past week, then it hits Sunday evening, and panic sets in!

LIFE IS CYCLIC! There is no escaping this simple fact. We will forever be in a cycle because that’s what we’ve chosen, as I believe, to experience human existence! The Sun rises and sets. You breathe, awake, eat and sleep in cyclic fashion. The seasons rotate, after winter, must come spring. We reproduce, we’re born, we die, we’re happy, we’re sad. The list of cycles of life goes on and on. It’s quite easy to succumb to these cycles and feel like we were not meant for great things - it’s just a simple question of surviving! But maybe it’s not so much a case of what we’re meant to do, as opposed to what we’re capable of doing! I believe that even through all these continous eternal cycles of life, we have the ability to take our understanding of it to the next level. Yes the repetition can sometimes cause your brain to melt of boredom but the trick is seeing the cycle in a whole new light, a way that never even fathomed!

The real voyage of discovery consists of not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes - Proust

That saying by Proust is more true than you’ll ever realise! Being in the same position over and over again is a natural part of life, experiencing it differently each time however, is not! It’s not nature, it’s creative! It’s the part of us the unleashes the creative genius within us all! This is where children have this skill down to a tee! They can play the same game over and over but what they tend to do is create new stories or characters or imaginery situations to go along with the real ones. They have mastered how to take the mundane and turn it into something exciting and fun!

It’s natural to feel boredom from doing the same job over and over again! But since when did nature intend us to feel bored when she’s offered us so much variety! The trouble with working in an office for example is that often it doesn’t allow for much creativity! You may end up looking out of the same window, day in, day out! The same people, the same situations, the same scenario’s etc. It just doesn’t give much scope for changing the way you feel because you’re seeing and doing the same things every day!

I remember I used to work on the 11th floor of a 21 story building. On the 21st floor there is a large restaurant and you can see for miles from that point. I don’t go to that building as often as I used to, but whenever I do, because I don’t see it often, I really get to appreciate the views from being that high up! There are no other tall buildings around it and on a clear day you get to see pretty much most of London.

That’s an example of how you can appreciate something you don’t see so often but how can you appreciate, something you see everyday, in a new way? How can you appreciate the people around you that you see all the time? How do you renew your feelings of excitement and anticipation? It’s quite simple really, YOU RENEW YOU! Ok, let me repeat that, YOU RENEW YOU!

“Ok Amit you’ve finally lost it and need to be put into a crazy house” I hear you say! Yes, yes, put me in a crazy house!

Think back to how you felt when you first picked up your mobile phone and made your first phone call. How did you feel? Wasn’t it exciting to know that you could be contacted and make calls while on the move? Wasn’t it amazing at the time that we first had the technology to do that? Or think back to the first time you enjoyed the experience of sending a email! I remember that these things to me were almost orgasmic! I love technology and gadgets and when I got my first mobile phone and my first laptop I was like a kid with new toys! Remember those moments when these things were new and exciting. What’s changed since then? Nothing except that the technology is like a 1000 times more powerful! We just got used to it all and now it’s a daily occurence. We’ve forgotten how to appreciate what this technology does for us.

Think about this: When you push a key on a keyboard, lets say, the letter “K”, You see a bit lettering on a piece of plastic. Now you push that button, and electrical signal is passed from that button through a circuit board, down some copper wire, through another super circuit board, though a super proccesor which is nothing more than a bunch of tansistors etched onto a silicon die which then sends those messages to a piece of software which then translates this signal into the letter “K” in your word processor. It does all this almost instantaneously! You don’t even notice all this going on, you take for granted that this amazing world is working in the background and all these intricate processes are going on in order that you can send messages to people in a coherent language form that we can all understand! HOW AMAZING IS THAT! I have to admit I forget this sometimes but then I remind myself of all the amazing bizarre stuff going on in the background in this quantum world that we never get to see! Most of this technology has come about in the last 10 - 20 years. Just imagine what we’ll be able to do in another 20 years!?!

There are an unlimited ways you can change the way you look at things. Just think about this, as you’ve been sitting here reading this, you’ve shed skin and grown new skin in it’s place. Unconsciously your body parts are renewing themselves and you don’t even realise it! You’re brain is doing way way way more than a computer could ever do and it does it with minimal of effort! You don’t even need to be plugged into a wall socket! :P

It will forever come down to the way you choose to renew your vision of life and the great cycle we’ve chosen. To me these mysteries will always provide me hours of fascination that takes the boredom away and lets me be a part of this amazing quantum world that forever works its magic while we enjoy the benefits. Remember to always appreciate the glorious microscopic wonderful events that are going on while you’re having your coffee and donuts! :)

Renew you!

Meditation Vs Medication

These days, we all too quickly want to jump to a quick fix for our minor ailments. A pain killer here, antibiotics there, antacids, etc etc. Just before you do have a quick think: Do I really need this? Spend just two minutes in silent reflection and ask your body: What do you truly need?

When you what to manifest something, anything at all, the secret is not to try and attain that thing. Doing so will always keep that thing out of your reach. The secret is to remember that thing is already within you, and all you have to do is vibrationally match up to it. Don’t strive for the thing, strive for the vibrational match.

PokerSometimes, it doesn’t matter how good your hand is, there will be times when there are others who will be dealt a better hand. Regardless of what hand you’ve been dealt, if you can come away from the table with your pockets empty and nothing but a smile on your face, you’ve truly learnt, understood and won the game.

There are some who win it all, go away with all the winnings, but does that make them happy? If it does, it doesn’t last for long. The best way to play your hand is with courage and understand that nomatter the outcome of the hand you will keep smiling and know that you will still be able to play another day. It can be heartbreaking at times, sometimes it just may seem like that no matter how good your hand, you still get beaten! (Trust me, I’ve been there!) Learn to judge when it’s a good time to fold and when it’s a good time to take that chance and let the cards reveal themselves. It’s not about the poker face, if you try and outsmart your opponents, you will be outsmarted. If you bluff, prepare to have your bluff called. Get to know the game well and know when to bluff and when to use your poker face.

Overall, make sure you enjoy the game, after all, it is a game, and in this great game that we call life, you can learn a lot about how to live, through playing poker, and playing the hand you’ve been dealt well. :)

MeditationMinute meditations are a method through which you can empower yourself in many different way throughout the day. No matter how busy you are, no matter how much you have on your plate, you can always spare yourself a minute or two, 3 or 4 times a day to recharge your spirit. Remember, this is for your well being and so you will give as time and commitment to this in proportion to how important you feel your well being is to you. This is your life and your time, make it important to feel refreshed and to find time for yourself because before you know it, this thing called life, will seem way way distant in the rear view mirror.

For much of my day I sit at an office desk in front of a computer. Working in I.T. there isn’t anywhere else I have to be unless I have to fix some hardware or attend meetings. What I find is that after even just an hour or two of sitting in the same position, when it comes to getting up and moving around, I feel very stiff and brittle throughout my whole body. It takes me at least a few minutes to regain my full flexibility.

For reasons of health and safety, our HR department recommends that we have a change of activity every 30 - 45 minutes to make sure we are getting plenty of movement and not doing to much damage to the body through sitting still for so long. In front of a computer, you eyes can strain, you can get headaches, your joints can get stiff, you can get dehydrated but most importantly you can become very dull from the lack of movement. :P

So what can you do during those few minutes free? Well for me, during those times where I change my activity, I have a number of minute meditations that I use to take my focus away from work for just a moment, and move it towards the bigger picture of human existence, as a whole, and the purpose of being. I try not to challenge myself with questions or bog myself down with proving what I feel to be true, I just allow myself to sink into the experience of being and enjoy the feelings of relaxed awareness and blissful communion with my innermost core.

I offer to you some suggestions and some of the momentary thoughts I use to regain alignment and enhance congruency with my being.

Thought 1 - As I sit here, I am aware that within this universe I am interconnected with every atom. I am a vibrational being and every atom of this body vibrates at a unique frequency just like each and every cell phone has a unique frequency. I know that my state of being will attract vibrational matches and so I, being the powerful creator that I am with unlimited choices, offer vibrations of love, happiness, peace, joy, caring, compassion to everything around me so that others around me feel the vibrations emanating from me. This in turn assists them in attracting vibrational matches.

Thought 2 - I am a 3 part being, a mind, a body and spirit. The body and mind are my tools for experiencing in this realm of the physical. I, the spirit, originated from a non physical plain and chose to inherit a body to come and experience the beauty of contrast within the physical dimension. This universe of relativity exists so that I experientially partake in that which I know of but have little experience in. I cannot know darkness without light; I cannot know happiness without sorrow. So I am grateful at all times to know the purpose of this physical see-saw.

Thought 3 - Every human spirit I encounter is a reflection of me just as I am a reflection of them. As I see each soul, I remember that we are ultimately one universal family. Skin colour, religion, nationality, languages, are all constructs of this social society but it is not the baseline of existence. These are just frames of reference and identity but ultimately we all originated with one purpose, with one desire, that is; to know ourselves through physical experience.

Thought 4 - At every single step I have a choice. I choose what to feel from what moment to the next. I choose how to perceive the world. Nothing shapes my perceptions other that those things that I have chosen to believe. I choose how I react to people, events and circumstances. No one is responsible for the way I feel except me. I have the power of choice. It is my greatest gift and is the most powerful force in the universe. No matter the outcome of my choices, I will remain empowered to know that I can choose something different the next time according to the purpose I’ve chosen for myself.

Thought 5 - I am extremely grateful to be here today. I am grateful for the joy of this experience. I am grateful for all the wonderful things in my life which I get to be a part of everyday. I take nothing for granted and appreciate everything. I am thankful that I chose this particular journey. I thank my creator and maker for offering me the freedom of choice whether to be here or not and I’m glad I made the decision that I did.

These are just a few of the ones that I use on a regular basis and I encourage you to make up your own as you see fit. Make them light but profoundly impactful to you. Think of new ones on a regular basis or just make them up as you go along. There are no hard and fast rules about how you can do this. Just a minute or two a couple of times a day to go deeper within yourself and you will feel more powerful that you have ever felt before and you will find yourself naturally more grateful for all your experiences. Have fun and make it a habit! :)

One of our regular readers Schumi sent me this lovely quote, we’re not sure of it’s origins but it was so eloquent I just had to post it up.

“Love is the most important ingredient of success. Without it, your life echoes emptiness. With it, your life vibrates warmth and meaning. Even in hardship, love shines through. Therefore, search for love — because if you don’t have it, your not really living — only breathing.”

Even though it’s said over and over again, it can never be said enough, without love there is no purpose to life. Love is more important that breathing. Love is.

Wind and RainFor the last couple of weeks now I’ve had a surge of energy. I’m not sure of the cause but I’ve felt a huge sense of determination and drive permeate me and as a result I’ve been waking up at 5.30am everyday on the dot! Over the last month or so I have been going to bed with the intention of waking up feeling rejuvenated after having a deep, restful nights sleep. I’m not sure if this has had an impact, but one thing’s for sure, I’m going to make use of this “spinach syndrome” :P as much as I can, especially since things have been a bit of a struggle recently due to the treatment I’ve been receiving.

The second my alarm goes off I’ve been getting up and stretching. Then, I get ready to go out for a nice long brisk walk, up any hills I can find to give my body a reasonable work out to get my metabolic rate going. Just before I left the house last Thursday morning, I looked out the window and could see that it was pouring with rain and extremely windy. It almost put me off going out but I was determined not to let the weather determine the course of my day. So I put on my shorts and T-shirt and decided to brave the the stormy weather regardless!

As I left the house, I could feel the rain pelting my legs because the wind was so strong. About 5 mintues into my walk I considered turning back but I knew that if I did I would end up, beating myself up, the entire day. So, I carried on, my arms and legs were freezing, my hands were numb, but I went on and focused on giving thanks for all the wondrous things in my life and my whole experience of life too. I had my Ipod with me and was listening to some of the tracks that really get me going and keep me focused. Some of the tracks I have on my training playlist are:

1) Jackson 5 - Can you feel it
2) James Brown - I feel good
3) Snap - I’ve got the power

These are just a few of the ones that really give me a buzz and that “vibe” of feeling like I’m on cloud 9. They truly are powerful anchors and what I’ve found is that during the day, I’ve been humming or whistling these tunes and whenever I do it fills me with even more energy.

So there I was on this power walk and saying some powerful affirmations out loud whilst also feeling gratitude for the amazing abundance within my life. As I got to the top of the hill I decided to do some press-ups against a wall and once I was done made my way back home. All the while, the wind was howling, and the rain continued to pour. As I was walking back I decided to shift my focus on visualizing my outcomes, the ultimate results for my life. During this time I went into such a deep trance, a deep meditation that I literally forgot about the wind and the rain, so much so that whole body started to feel warm, like I was covered from head to toe and protected by a blanket. While I was in that state my consciousness shifted towards thinking about my spirit, the non physical part of my being. All the while I was barely consciously aware of where I was or what I was doing. My body was on auto pilot! It was only when I got close to my front door that I realised that not only was I almost home, but that I was no longer feeling cold or anything of the sort.

It was almost as if my conscious mind decided to take a break and become unconscious for a while, and my subconscious came to the forefront and was in charge. It goes to show how powerful the unconscious mind can be and when it’s released, little can distract it from it’s purpose.

This is good practice for many situations and so if you’re ever in a situation, where you’re feeling cold, hot, tired, or just not quite with it, start moving around and focus your attention on your outcomes. Focus on them deeply to the point where you’re almost dreaming. Get deeply into that thought and sink into it, once you’re deep you’ll naturally move away from the physical and move towards the spiritual, your consciousness will gravitate more towards the spirit essence of your being.

It’s a fun exercise to do and I love to hear what your experiences of this and if you do something similar. :)
