Hi All,

This is slightly adrift of my normal theme of posting but I thought why not combine something fun with also some friendly discussion and debate. DC will be appearing in the movie and so I wanted to find out what your thoughts were on the clip and it’s effect on the perceptions of eastern teachings.

I’ve always been a fan of Mike Myers and the clip made me giggle! Watch the clip and see what you think. Please also feel free to share your thoughts:

He does say he is a man of no one faith or religion, but there is some clear religious iconography and terminology used in different videos and sites related to the movie.

It’s bizarre as on my radio show I play a character called the love doctor…uncanny!

What I think may work as a strategy for anything and what does actually work is two very different things. So even if you think something might not work it may be worth giving it a try. Don’t be afraid to try different different approaches and strategies because If you never try you will never know!

When I was collecting stories for my radio show a few weeks ago I came across this story of how Estelle came to meet Kanye West which eventually led to them forming a collaboration and creating the number one hit ‘American Boy’.

“Estelle has revealed that she first met her musical collaborator Kanye West at Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘n’ Waffles.

The pair, who are currently number one in the UK charts with the single ‘American Boy’, bumped into each other at the Hollywood soul food eatery.

She told the Daily Telegraph: “I went to Roscoe’s Chicken and bumped into Kanye.

“I was like, ‘Lord, if you’re above, I need to meet Kanye, he needs to come outside.’ Ten seconds later he came out and I went ‘Thank you, Jesus!’”

(Taken from Digital Spy)

A powerful example of not only the power of asking but also the power of gratitude too. :-D

I’m truly looking forward to the day that car manufacturers start asking the question: “How can we build cars that help or improve the environment rather than destroy it?”

We shouldn’t just wait for the oil to run out and then out of desperation make changes. Lets do it now; there is no time like the present!

Personal Development and the bigger picture

Whatever your perception of the world, there is an undeniable truth in that the change comes from within. Everyone will see the world in a different way, some people will choose to focus on the economic crisis, some will choose to focus on the the upheaval in Tibet, some will choose to focus on the political situation in Zimbabwe and some will focus on the rising fuel prices. Where does Personal Development fit into the the current climate?

It boils down to whether we choose to focus on the symptom or the cure. Personal Development is the cure whereas each individual problem is just the symptom of a greater underlying problem. Trying to tackle each issue one by one is kind of like masking the symptom with pain killers. It never gets to the root of the issue. The solution is understanding. A broader scale understanding that we are all one and have just this one home to share.

Do you see your family as just those around you that share a home with? Or do you see every single soul on this planet as not just an extended family but an immediate family? Try observing a stranger on the street as someone who is part of your immediate family. You will be amazed at the difference it makes to the way you feel about them. Suddenly they’re no longer a threat to you. As soon as you look at the physical differences of language or culture or skin colour or any difference, those differences can make you feel the need to arm yourself. Whereas if choose to look at the similarities instead of the differences a whole different world opens up to you.

Think of them as human just as you are. Think of them as someone who is just trying to find a purpose just as you are. Think of them as someone who is trying to make a lively hood just as you are. Think of them as someone who is creating opportunities just as you are. Think of them as someone who would like to enjoy life and experience some variety. Think of them as someone who believes they are significant just as you do yourself.

Can you feel the shift within you already?

This is where the path of Personal Development makes inroads to the relationships between all beings on this small planet. It begins with a small shift and so, if we can start with ourselves, those beliefs and attitudes spread and eventually will create mass change, especially if we educate our children this way.

Meeting Deepak Chopra

On Monday I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing Deepak Chopra speak personally at a seminar in London.

For those who don’t know who Deepak Chopra is, he is a medical doctor by profession but over the years has fused eastern medicine with quantum physics and has developed his own philosophy on the mind-body-spirit connection. He has written over 50 books in which he very wonderfully and succinctly explains the connections in a way which even a child could understand.

His talk was lively, entertaining and very informative. He shared some very interesting facts about the make up of the human body and how within two years every atom in our body is completely replaced and so in essence; we are completely different. So what is it that retains the information that allows me to still know myself as Amit Sodha? ;-)

During the talk we had a brief 10 minute meditation in which all we did was repeat the words to ourselves in silence “I am”. So simple and yet it was so powerful. It also reminded me of a blog post in my ‘100 Days of Wisdom‘ series from day 2.

I was so engrossed in his discussion that I didn’t take many notes but he did share 15 thoughts at the end which I wanted to also share here too. I was scribbling as fast as I could and so I believe I captured all the messages correctly but if you think I missed something please do let me know.

1) There are hidden dimensions to our existence

Jesus - The Kingdom of Heaven is within you.

2) The world is in you

Jesus - Be the world and not of it.

3) There are 4 paths to unity

Jesus - For my yoke is easy and my burden is light

4) All fulfillment comes from within

Jesus - Ask and you will receive

5) Suffering is the result of not knowing the true reality

Jesus - Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us

6) Freed comes from choiceless awareness

Be still and know that I am god

7) The world is a mirror of the self

Jesus - As you sow, so shall you reap

8 ) Evil is not our enemy , evil is the personal and collective shadow

Jesus - Resist not evil

9) You live in multi dimensions

Jesus - In my fathers house there are many mansions

10) Death makes life possible

Jesus - You must be born from above

11) The universe thinks through you

Jesus - You are the light of the world

12) The only time is now

Jesus - You are the light of the world

13) You are truly free when you are not a person; we all exist in consciousness

14) Consciousness conceives, governs, constructs and becomes reality through synchronicity, self interaction and karmic connections.

Jesus - For where there are two or three gathered in my name - I will be there

15) The goal of life is unity consciousness and transcending the limitations of space, time and causality.

Jesus - What does it profit a man to gain the world and to lose his soul.

If you didn’t get to see him this time join me in setting a very powerful intention for him to return in the very near future! :-D

Kitaro Nishida said: “If my heart can become pure and simple like that of a child, I think that there can probably be no greater happiness than this.”

While I was reading this quote in my little Zen companion book on my desk at work, it made me realise the simple truth that as children, we become so eager to become adults and when we become adults we become eager to become like children. That comes from thinking that being in one state or another will bring with it happiness whereas the truth is that the most amount you can have is by being in the moment; enjoying and making the most of now!

People are always searching about the truth and what is real but is there such a thing?

Have you have recalled an event in your memory, a place you’ve visited, an object or anything of the like only to see it again, this time in person, and then realise that it wasn’t like you remembered at all? Or on the flip side, have you ever thought about how something was going to be only to reach there and then think “this isn’t how I imagined it was going to be at all”.

I remember trying a piece of food and thinking “eugh, that tastes horrible” only to try it again a few years later and then think “ahhh, actually, that doesn’t take too bad” and now I love it!

What this tells me is that no matter how I see things, even right now, I’m not actually seeing them as they are. I’m seeing them through a series of filters that I’ve built up over my life time. You’ve all seen mind magicians like Derren Brown do tricks like convince someone who’s seeing something that we think is red but after a bit ‘abacadabra’ suddenly the subject is now seeing the object as yellow.

This suggests that it’s all a matter of programming. No matter what I believe to be real it’s all just simple series of constructs and filters that I’ve built up over time and without being conscious I will skew those memories with my own opinions of how I wanted them or thought of them to be.

So is perception more real that what we perceive to be real? (Yes I like confusing my readers! )

Even science is now teaching us that what we see if not really what we’re seeing. I may look down and see my hand and just think I’m seeing four fingers, a thumb and my palm but what I’m really seeing is a sea of particles, sub atomic particles and all sorts of other wonderful things that are vibrating, dancing, popping in and out of existence, flying perpetually, etc the list just goes on!

Great…so how does that help me?

Think back and try and remember a time when you thought you observed something a particular way only to return to it and realise it’s completely different to how you remembered? So understand you’ve constructed and obscured that memory. What else have you obscured?

Now that you know that what is real is truly limited by your perceptual experience you can then choose to change alter your perception. Look at your life right now and ask is this real, or just my perception of it? If you’re perception has been skewed by your filters how can you alter your perception in order to alter your experience?

A very simple exercise you can do right now is think about something which you consider to be a problem for you right now. It can be anything at all you choose. Now you have this in your mind, change your perception of the problem; instead of calling it a problem call it a challenge! What can you learn from this challenge? How is this challenge going to benefit you, your experience of life and others? (Send your answers on a postcard to… :-P )

So lets take this up a scale and think about global issues and what we see as issues that don’t just affect us but the globe as a whole. Think about the environment, recycling, world poverty and nations at war. If all you know about these issues is what you’ve seen on T.V. then your perception, or your definition of what you think is real about those events and circumstances, is filtered through another medium and then also filtered again once your brain has stored the information. So you’ve now got two layers of filtration.

Think again now for a second about what you think it real…

Your reality is really and truly your perception of it. Or is that just my perception of what the difference between reality and percption is? :-p

My reality is my perception of reality. There is no right or wrong with my perceptions, no absolute truth except my truth through my learnings and experiential filters.

    Y.E.P. (Youth Empowerment Project)

I’ve been working on an idea and a concept and it’s manifesting in many forms in the way of books, dvd’s, radio projects and seminars for children and young adults. I’ll be talking more about this in the upcoming months but for now I just wanted to share a simple concept with you.

Firstly, I often hear it talked about and this is whether the parents or the educators are to blame for the behaviour of children? My view is simply this: It doesn’t matter! Asking that question solves or achieves nothing! A simpler approach and a more productive one is for all of us to take responsibility to some degree. When we do and we take genuine interest in the the up-bringing of youth, you’d be amazed at the difference it makes! Shoving the blame to and fro takes our time and attention away from dealing with the challenge.

Secondly there is on a very simple explanation of why young adults get involved in crime, vandalism, alcohol, drugs, bullying etc etc. It’s quite simply because they it’s the only way they know how to feel powerful or, putting it another way, empowered! That’s the only reason ever! It gives them a sense of personal power and that is because quite simply they haven’t been shown any other way to do so! Once you show them how to feel empowered in a different way suddenly they won’t feel the need to do those other things to feel powerful, they’ll automatically lose interest and start taking an interest in other good things that make them feel empowered.

A very simple concept with a very powerful message and impact.

I’ve be talking about this more over the coming months.

It’s a great feeling to have my blog back up and running again! It was a bit scary there at one point as I thought I’d lost everything and I also noticed that my site was no longer being indexed by Google. In fact it was because of that I noticed that something was wrong.

I first noticed that the number of hits on my site had gone down considerably. So I decided to search for my site on Google and noticed I could not see it. I asked a few friends what my be wrong with my site and why that might happen? No one seemed too sure but they had some ideas and one of my friends spotted that I had and immense amount of spam code embedded within my blog. It was hardly surprising considering that I was still running version 1.5 of wordpress. I did attempt to upgrade my blog a few months ago and was unsuccessful. When I asked for help through wordpress no one responded to my messages on the forum so I decided to leave it again until I had more time.

This though though the situation was incredibly desperate. So I backed up everything and deleted my blog directory on my server and decided to start from scratch. This time I enlisted the help of a friend who was a lot more web savvy than I and he did the upgrade for me but it still didn’t work. Finally, thanks to his suggestion I got a setting rectified by my web host. That was supposed to fix it but for some reason it still wasn’t working! After nearly working on my site for 24 hours straight I finally managed to fix it and get it all running. I looked around for a nice theme and found the one you see before you now. I will be making minor changes at some point but for now this is a nice clean design with some good features.

My site is still not showing up on Google search however I think that for some reason Google had a cached version of a robots.txt file that was set to disallow crawling. I manually changed that and now I believe that will get my site indexed once again…fingers crossed!

I learned a very important lesson that if I’m going to continue to maintain my own blog then to keep the software up to date and change the passwords regularly. If, like me, you’re not so web savvy, then a good plugin to get is the Wordpress Automatic Update Plugin which pretty much does the upgrades to wordpress for you with the simple click of a button. My gratitude goes out to the creator of that plugin as I know it’s going to make the maintenance of this blog that much easier!

This experience has been a great lesson in personal development and the power of choice because, ultimately, I know that these problems occurred through the choices I made. It wasn’t a bad or a good thing specifically but I learned valuable lessons and web skills through it so I see the good that’s come out of this whilst also knowing that it wasn’t the best approach. However it’s done now so I’ll remember the lessons and try my best to implement them into the future.

Now comes the easy bit of writing blog posts!
