Working with children is not only hugely rewarding but also brings with it the greatest learning experiences. If you want to learn about where you are in terms of your own personal development - go work with children!

A few weeks ago I was asked to give an inspiriational talk to some teens at a referral unit. These teens are there because they have been excluded from school or have had a complete disinterest in school. Last Wednesday was the day I had to give the talk and I decided to not plan too much in advance and only to plan my key points and deliver my talk as free flowing as possible.

I realised afterwards that it was probably not the best approach. Something I’ve learned from doing stand-up comedy is that the key to be able to improvise and maintain that sense of control while doing it is to be fully versed in what you’re going to say. I learned it the hard way but it was a great lesson to learn. I also found other areas where I was lacking in that children, in order to remain engaged, need plenty of humour and information that sparks the imagination; nothing too challening, just enough that it gets them thinking!

The key message of my talk to make it clear to them that they all had a unique gift. They may not have discovered it yet but it is most certainly there! I shared my story of how I left school with virtually no qualifications and yet today I have branched out into several different areas and along the way I’ve tried a variety of different things. I’ve decided for next time that I’m going to include more of my talents including magic and comedy. Magic is something I haven’t done for a long time but I recently decided to take it up again for this very purpose.

I remember now that in order to pull of a magic trick with confidence it requires an immense amount of practise and once pefected then, and only then, should it be performed. During the course of the trick because you have thorough practised the trick you no longer have to think about doing it. You could do it with your eyes closed and while frying an egg! If you can get to that stage small distractions don’t matter you unconsciously go through the processes that you need to do in order to complete the illusion.

What I learned is that speaking to teenagers requires a very similar principle and the key is being well versed and getting plenty of practise. What I also got from there day is that there is much work to be done. My goal there was not to change them, it was to empower them. It was for them to awaken to the fact that they do have gifts and if utilised they can go on to do amazing things no matter their level of education.

I know that this will be the first of many talks that I’ll be giving to children over the coming month/years and if you are responsible for a group of youngsters and would like me to come and give an entertaining, inspiring, fun and challenging talk then please do get in touch with me and I will do my absolute best to accomodate your requirements.

This entry is part 1 of 5 in the series Weekly Focus Point

Here is the first of my new series giving you something to focus on each week for your own personal development. This is truly a powerful technique and tool for you to maximise your potential at anything you do. Just to give you an example of how powerful this can be. If I ever experience a lack of ideas for this blog then this is what I do and the ideas then just stream into mind more than I can even remember afterwards. And you can do it for anything. If you want to be a better driver, card player, surfer, games player, whatever this is something for you but it is also a way of recharging your batteries so to speak if you’re ever feeling low or lethargic.

This process is called being centred or present and there are a few ways you can reach this point. Any time your thoughts drift to either the future or past your emotions will be quite intense. Depending on what you’re thinking about you could experience extreme stress, anxiety, excitement but you will know it because the emotion will almost be livid in a way.

The purest emotion I’ve ever experienced or felt is when I’m totally centred on focussed on now or the present moment. Call it a form of meditation or just concentration on the now or whatever you wish but you will feel a very pure and natural sensation. Here’s an experiment you can try while doing anything you want; I was doing it yesterday while driving but I you can do it during anything at all, while at work, listening to a piece of music, playing a sport or whatever you choose.

Bring your attention to the present moment. If you find your thoughts drifting to the furture or the past just gradually bring them back to the now. Find peace in what it is that you are doing now. Look for the beauty in the present moment and suddenly you will find that all your desires will fall away. Contentment seems like a word that doesn’t do it justice but it’s the closest word I can find. Another word that just came to me is you will feel harmony.

There is nothing which is not spiritual but this process awakens that experience. Be here, be now. Suddenly the most mundane task can take on a feeling of being pure and spiritual. Just be focussed on now. Your mind will drift and it’s okay if that happens, just bring it back to the now and again turn your focus to where you are and what you’re doing now. This mindful-nowness will almost make time stand still in this beautiful experience of this present moment.

Try it for yourself and I promise that once you do you will want to experience it again and again. When you learn to do it while doing action then you will be better at whatever it is that you do. Let me know how you get on and practise this for a week. There is nothing else you need to try or learn but just learn and practise this for one week.

Blackberry BoldI recently got my free Blackberry Bold mobile phone upgrade to replace the Nokia N95 8GB that I was using. (Although I will still be using and keeping my N95 for my other contract but primarily for the camera!) It was a difficult choice but in the end I wanted to get a device that had a full qwerty keyboard that wasn’t a PDA style slide-out keyboard and the Bold was the only one that fit the bill. The Nokia E71 was an option but the keyboard seemed less usable to me. (Especially taking into account my giant sized hands)

I am still a strong fan of the Nokia’s and in my mind the Nokia N95 8GB is by far the best phone ever made so far. It doesn’t look amazing but it has every feature you would would want your gadget to have with the exception of Digital Radio.

I had the opportunity of using the new Nokia Push email service which was, I have to say, excellent and I would go so far to say that it is better than the Blackberry Internet Service. The great thing about the Nokia push email was that it would mark emails as read once you opened them but the Blackberry services does not do that.

I wanted the full qwerty keyboard so that I could blog on the move because I am always out and about. The easiest way of doing that without going to the browser on my Blackberry is to use the wordpress email blogging facility. The problem is that I cannot get it to work! I’ve posted a help message on the wordpress forums but I have yet to receive a response. If anyone would be willing to help me get it working I would greatly appreciate it!

Flexibility

In times of change, it is the learners who will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully equipped for a world that no longer exists.

- Al Rogers

I love the above quote and I only just remembered to include it while writing this post. This post was sparked by the news today of the collapse of the giant US investment bank Lehman Brothers. Even though the media will always put the most disastrous spin on any event, todays news does give an insight of how things are in terms of the global economy.

No matter what happens, those who are flexible will be the ones who will be able to excel, nomatter what conditions transpire whether that be due to the economy or any other event that causes a global shift. Find a way of embracing change learn to nurture with yourself the key skill of flexibility. If your first reaction is one of fear or doubt change it by instead asking yourself: “How can I make the event at hand work for me?
