Have you realised yet that you are unique and that you have an amazing talent to offer the world? Have you made an attempt to discover that gift and allow it to emerge for all the world to see?
Even though there are over 6 billion of us occupying this tiny piece of real estate in a gigantic universe you do have something precious which the world needs to see. I think Marianne Williamson said it best when she said – ‘your playing small does not serve the world’. Don’t play small. Find that one you thing you have that you do so well that it is almost unequaled.
Why Talent Gets Wasted
Every year so far, when I’ve been and given my talk at the PRU, I’ve talked about talent. I believe that it is essential to understand and acknowledge that we have something special within. It’s not something with which you need to compete, it’s something you need to discover and use.
I can’t think of anything more sad than seeing someone with so much talent and not knowing what to do with it or how to even begin. I’ve met hundreds of people who have both skills and ideas which get buried to the bottom of the cupboard because of one simple thing; lack of self belief. It is this lack of confidence that holds people back from creating a new niche or path.
Discover Your Talents
I’ve heard it often that people are just stuck and not sure what to do with life. The trick is to get out there and try new things. Only when you experiment can you discover what you’re good at, and equally as important, what you’re not good at or what you don’t enjoy.
When you were a child, what did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? I remember one of my dreams was to be an Aeronautical Engineer (don’t ask) or, believe it or not, a Teacher! I think my dreams became more grand as I become older (yes I was a wierd kid) and then it involved doing drama, acting, being on T.V., doing radio, and for many years I put that all on hold.
In the last 5 years or so I decided to revive those dreams and get them back on track. I didn’t just have one dream, I had many. So I decided to take a step into all of them to see which one I enjoyed the most. The funny thing is, they all tie in and are complimenting each other. Each of those talents can be used for a common goal.
How To Tune Into Your Talents
Think back to those flashes you’ve had of things you wanted to do but thought ‘nah, I could never do that’. Where did those flashes come? Did you see something that resonated with you? Was it being a pro stunt driver? Or was it as the chief pie taster at the Mr Kipling cake factory. Take a moment now and really think about it.
So now you have some idea of something that gets the core of your being excited. Remember; your dreams are yours and there is no need to be embarrased or ashamed of dreaming big.
So What Stopped You?
Did you convince yourself that you don’t have what it takes to be good at something? Maybe you’ve just decided that you’ll do it when ‘the time is right’ in the future. That time never comes my friends! You have to take hold of it now. Recognise when you’re creating obstacles and thoughts that are holding you back from taking action now.
What are you really good at?
What are you really good at? Are you a fantastic parent? Maybe you’re an awesome friend. Maybe you’re a meticulous doctor who treats his/her patients as human beings with real compassion? Or maybe you’re an inspiring teacher who speaks the language or his/her students so that they truly absorb the knowledge. Maybe you’re great at discovering new T.V. shows; after all there’s like a thousand channels out there with so much to offer. May be you can bring the smaller shows to the attention of a great audience?
Now That You Know
Now that you know you have a talent or you begun the path of exploring what it is, the question is, what are you going to do with it? Are you going to let it lie dormant to gather dust and cobwebs? Or are you going to now allow it to emerge for the whole world to see? Have you got the guts to set yourself a challenge of taking that gift and risk putting it all on the line? It’s time for you to go balls to the wall and set yourself free from all those false limitations. You have a gift, use it!

Amit –
Powerful stuff – I totally agree that we all have a unique talent and should put it to use. I’ve seen the difference it makes to my clients and to the world around them. I think you have a very practical starting point for finding what it is that makes someone special – thank you!

Hi Amit,
I totally agree. Every single one of us has a gift and talent to share with the world. We are all important and we all have a life that has purpose. The key is to tap into it and be true to who we are.
We all want a meaningful life and we all can have a meaningful life. We just need to be true to who we are and use what we have to make the world a better place. We are not here just to consume stuff.
Beautiful post, my friend!
Hope all is awesome with you and your family!

Hey Amit,
This is a big subject. Talents allow us to be naturally good in certain activities, and being a lazy person, this is important for me
On top of this, I think that when we use our talents in a way which is meaningful to us, we also get fulfillment, the ultimate human emotion. That’s Positive Psychology right there.

Hey Eduard,
Thats true and I think all of us writers are dicovering a particular type of talent that can be applied in so many ways – in fact most talents can. They can be applied in different scenario’s and all we have to do is choose the one that means the most to us!

Oh Amit,
This is such a beautiful piece of inspiration. And Marianne Williamson’s that particular quote..the whole big quote..is my all time fav
We are all born to shine! And our unique gift is what will give us that much needed shine.
Superb!
Much Love,
Z~
p.s. I await your story of epiphany

Same here, that quote is my fav of all time too!
Thanks to your inspiration I’ll definitely put up that story soon!
xx
Wow Amit, I can relate to this in so many ways! So many people live their lives copying their peers and elders never tapping into that source of energy that makes us all unique. Remove the layers of fear, competition, hatred, envy and low self-esteem to reveal it shining in all its glory…Talent! Common to all and yet sadly placed on the back seat for another day. I used to hold back on my dreams until I realised one day they were still there itching to be released. That’s when I took the risk…Now I’m a singer, painter and author with my first novel out in June (I had to plug it again!) I’ve never looked back. It just takes some courage, perseverence and a whole lot of faith.

LOL you plug away my friend. It’s all good and I’m glad you’ve taken the brave step in not exploring your talents but in using them too!
This is wonderful Amit, am really encouraged. This is because each and everyone has a unique talent that enables him/her to make a contribution to the world in a very wonderful way.
once again thanks

That’s fab Tess, care to elaborate?
Amit, I admire you for tackling the great question, what are people’s unique talents and how do they offer it to the world. I do think people just have a hard time deciding what to do for three reasons:
* They are unsure of what they are good at
* They aren’t confident that they have anything valuable to share with the world
* They don’t believe that what they have to share will be valuable to enough people
Thanks for sharing helpful tips to help combat these. I am off to go implement them

Amit, for as long as I can remember I have been holding myself back!
Now this may come as a surprise to you since I do put myself out there a lot already – but I know I could be doing a lot more. Maybe I need a coach:-)
So all suggestions most welcome.
My greatest gift to the world is probably an ability to bring people together and empower them to be the best they can.
On a personal note, I have always wanted to learn the guiter and also take up salsa. it doesn’t matter if I have the talent for them or not – just want to do the best I can. So this summer I am spending some time on both:-)

That’s so bizarre Arvind as I was given a guitar and I started taking lessons some years ago. I gave it up because I was struggling with finding the time to do it. I also used to do salsa but I gave that up to as they changed the day of the classes which clashed with my badminton, as much as I loved it. But I’ve found other talents since and I still do it occasionally.
The great thing about salsa classes is that when I went us lads were outnumbered by the women 3-1…it was so much fun! LOL
