Change The Way You Feel About Failure

On Wednesday I ran the JPMorgan 3.5mile run for my 4th year in a row. Each year so far I managed to run it a little quicker each time. The first year I ran it in 50 minutes. The second year I ran it in 45 minutes. The third year I ran it in 42 minutes and this year I ran it 39 minutes. Over the 4 years I’ve managed to slash 11 minutes off my time. It’s hardly a blistering pace but for someone with my BMI is a great time.

I changed my strategy this year just to see what would happen. I usually start off very slowly and let me body work out when to speed up. This year I consciously started off fast and almost burned myself out after 1K. I realised that I could fail but I just kept pushing and pushing. I really wanted to give up at one point but I wasn’t worried about failing. I decided early on that if this strategy made me fail then at least I’d learned the way not to run a race! ;-) I realised that failure is nothing to be afraid of. Change the way you feel about it. Learn to find the part about failure which, when you think about it, inspires you to try again without the ‘fear’ of failing. It’s the fear that keeps us from doing stuff and it’s also doing the things that give us fear that make us stronger.

How would your life be different right now if you no longer feared the failure and looked upon it as merely a destination through which you grow?

Failure as a way to grow. Failure as inspiration.

This is a great way to look at it. Thank you so much for this article!
